Gothic is set in a kingdom that was being overrun by that favorite fantasy menace, the orcs. The king had little choice — the orcs were about to gain control of the ore mines, which were the source of the kingdom’s wealth. The mages were to erect a barrier around the mines, but something went wrong and the barrier covered the entire valley. The prisoners who were forced to work the mines saw their chance, and took control of the valley
